Hey there vintage fashion enthusiasts and treasure hunters! If you find yourself strolling the picturesque streets of Amsterdam, and you’re a big fan of thrifting, you’re in luck. The city is home to a vibrant vintage scene with plenty of shops waiting to be explored. Get ready to dive into a world of unique garments, one-of-a-kind accessories, and timeless style. Here is our list of the best vintage shops in Amsterdam that you won’t want to miss, as well as the best vintage (flea) markets.
Before we dive in, we’d like to mention some of the most important areas in Amsterdam for vintage shopping, which are the Haarlemmerdijk, the Nine Streets District, and the Waterlooplein. These areas are super nice to wander through with lots of small boutiques and gift shops, hip coffee bars, and even more vintage spots than those mentioned on this list.
IJhallen Flea Market
Our absolute number one market for finding the most unique items, often for a great price too, is this flea market! Held only one weekend per month (sometimes two weekends per month in spring/summer), the IJhallen Flea Market is a true paradise for bargain hunters. Anyone can sign up to vend here, which is often a mix of semi-professional traders and people happily discarding their own unwanted clothing for a few euros per piece. Located in the IJ-hallen, the space is one of Europe’s largest and busiest indoor flea market venues. With over 500 stands, you could spend all day browsing through heaps of vintage clothing, accessories, furniture, vinyl records, and more.
Keep in mind that it can get very crowded during the peak hours in the middle of the day, especially with all the people who bring big bags and trolleys with them. In summer, the market moves outdoors, creating a more spacious, open-air atmosphere. We recommend wearing a practical outfit to go to the IJhallen, so that you’re able to easily try things on. Tickets to enter the market cost 6 euros, and the so-called “early bird” tickets are available for 10 euros. This allows you to enter the market as early as 6.00 while the vendors are still unpacking, giving you the opportunity to snatch up the best stuff during the calm before the storm. Is it worth it? We did the early-bird thing a few times, but honestly, it really depends on what you are looking for.
Most early-birdies are traders of secondhand clothing themselves, trying to score all the casual designer- and premium brand items they can find to resell in their own shop. So if you are keen on finding that casual Isabel Marant sweater or Karl Lagerfeld blazer with the tag still attached, it makes sense to go very early. But if you are hunting for unique sequin jackets, retro dresses, or funky leather jackets, being extra early isn’t really that necessary.
Episode
Number one on the list of best vintage shops in Amsterdam is definitely Episode. This is because their offering is the most diverse in styles. Their extensive collection boasts everything from vintage Levi’s jeans and funky ’80s dresses to retro leather jackets and nostalgic band tees. With multiple locations scattered throughout the city, Episode is a vintage lover’s paradise. Each piece has a story to tell, and you’re sure to find a gem that speaks to your fashion sensibilities.
Laura Dols
Nestled in the heart of the popular 9-streets district, Laura Dols is a must-visit for lovers of elegant vintage. Known for their stunning collection of vintage evening gowns and wedding dresses, this shop houses everything you might need for a glamorous theme party. An array of beautifully preserved vintage garments from different eras awaits you here, including formal accessories such as top hats and cumber bands. Whether you’re after a show-stopping party dress or a timeless coat, Laura Dols has got you covered.
Vijzel Vintage
Step back in time and let your inner vintage vixen shine at Vijzel Vintage. This place has a wide range of, well, everything! Authentic vintage denim, original 70s leather jackets, gorgeous embroidered Pakistani waistcoats, beaded gowns, and lots of unique designer items. Moreover, new batches of vintage delights come in quite frequently, so you will have a chance to find new treasures during every visit. Just keep in mind that the shop can be quite cluttered when a lot of goods have just come in. So if you feel overwhelmed, ask the owner for advice if you’re looking for anything specific. We definitely recommend that you not enter the store with headphones on or while speaking on your phone, as he -understandably- finds this very disrespectful.
Zipper
Another tiny gem located in the 9-streets area. If you’re on the hunt for eclectic and affordable vintage pieces, look no further than Zipper. This funky thrift store offers a nice selection of casual clothing, accessories, and even home decor items. From ’90s grunge to ’80s power shoulders, Zipper has an extensive collection that caters to the more upbeat vintage taste.
Bij Ons Vintage
Bij Ons Vintage is a treasure trove waiting to be explored, with three locations across the city. One can be found in the 9-streets area, with the second located in the center, and a third tucked away in the hip neighborhood of De Pijp. This cozy boutique specializes in hand-picked vintage clothing from the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s. Whether you’re searching for a unique vintage blouse or a groovy pair of bell-bottoms, Bij Ons Vintage has plenty of options to satisfy your retro cravings.
Marbles Vintage & Design
With a focus on high-quality vintage pieces, Marbles Vintage & Design offers a curated selection of clothing and accessories from various decades. From elegant silk scarves to luxurious fur coats, this boutique caters to those with an eye for sophistication and timeless style. Step inside and let the charm of the past envelop you at one of their three stores in De Pijp area, the Haarlemmerdijk, or Staalstraat.
Time Machine Vintage
As the name suggests, Time Machine Vintage takes you on a journey through different eras of fashion. Located in the lively Jordaan district, this store showcases a mix of vintage clothing, shoes, and accessories for both men and women. From ’50s swing dresses to ’90s grunge flannel shirts and a lot of sequined tops, Time Machine Vintage has something for everyone.
Penny Lane Vintage
While some vintage shops offer collections that are often a mix of secondhand contemporary items and vintage, we really appreciate how Penny Lane is very genuine in curating peices that are truly vintage. The colorful store has a great selection for men and women, with a lot of attention to tailored items. You will find a mix of vintage designer clothing, as well as elegant pantsuits and great quality Afghan coats and 70’s sundresses at their charming shop located in De Pijp area.
Rumors Vintage & Design
Another hidden gem for vintage enthusiasts is Rumors Vintage & Design, plus their sister store We are Vintage. These boutiques offer a carefully curated selection of vintage clothing, accessories, and jewelry from various eras. From elegant vintage gowns to unique leather bags and boots, Rumors Vintage & Design caters to those seeking individuality and style.
Waterlooplein Market
Besides the many vintage shops in Amsterdam, the city also homes some interesting markets. If you love the thrill of stumbling upon vintage treasures, the daily Waterlooplein Flea Market is a must-visit. The bustling square offers a vast array of vendors selling new, sub-culture-inspired goods, including psytrance clothing and Indian silk items, as well as silver accessories, and more. Furthermore, there are also countless thrift stalls with piles of second-hand garments and shoes to dig through. Embrace the lively atmosphere and let serendipity guide you!
