Amsterdam Open Air

Remembering the previous years we attended Amsterdam Open Air Festival, It seems to have become a subconscious tradition for us to arrive early to comfortably lay down and settle in the grass around the chill out zone while our friends trickle in one-by-one to join us. This area is usually located alongside the water, scattered with beanbags, cushions and hammocks while tranquilizing music serves its purpose to break the early afternoon and relax, preparing us for the exciting yet strenuous day ahead.

Self-proclaimed Amsterdam in-crowders will dismiss this festival referring to its mainstream character, but it’s our experience that Open Air delivers exactly what it represents, while doing it very well, so one must take it for what it is. It might not be the kind of festival where you can discover new and upcoming artists, nor is it a platform for experimental music genres. This is a place which comprises an amalgamation of popular music, fueled by and fused with inspiring creativity which is evident throughout the festival’s grounds.

The beautiful surroundings of Gaasperpark have undergone a thorough metamorphosis according to this year’s theme; Zodiac signs. Besides the enchanting décor, this theme is also reprised by the many acts and creative endeavors seen throughout the day. Not only will you be dazzled by the gorgeous costumed models and actors walking around, but there is also quite a variety of activities one can partake in. How about getting a trim at the Jack Daniels Barbershop by HaarBarbaar, or getting dressed up in theme and posing with your friends at the Paardenkracht photobooth? Moreover, receiving a massage or browsing through the hippie market all suffice when in need of a break from dancing. And dance you shall!

The festival is home to 10 different stages, all programmed by popular Amsterdam based event organizations such as KLEAR, MTV, GirlsLoveDJs, STRAF_WERK, Kriss Kross and Vunzige Deuntjes. If you have been to any of the events of either of these concepts, you will know exactly what kind of music you can expect, stage hopping from urban beats to deep house vibes as you please.

Other important conveniences of this festival include the smoothness of operations, nobody likes to queue, but Open Air manages to minimize the length of lines by spreading them out and the facilities are always adequate. Furthermore, it seems like the event is blessed with sunny weather despite always being scheduled for early June.
