Fien Ploeger “Under Construction” SS18 – MBFWA

Sometimes FashionWeek Amsterdam unleashes newcomers on to the scene whose vibe is totally outlandish, in a positive way. Using her debut as the chance to present her first collection of denim pieces in an unconventional way, we are motioned towards the Westerliefde venue to experience a collection by Fien Ploeger within a different setting, which is much more in character with her vision. Doing some initial research on the young designer, we find out she has first studied at the ROC Amsterdam and Gerrit Rietveld Academy, after which she went on to complete an intensive masters course at the Sandberg Institute. She has interned with well-known designers such as Bas Kosters and Karl Lagerfeld, in addition to working as a dresser at the Viktor & Rolf 2011 fall/winter show.

The Westerliefde room has been transformed and decked out with benches along an improvised walk way, decorated with light tubes all the way down. DJ Sunny Ramona takes the stage and hosts the show in the entertaining demeanor that is reminiscent from classic fashion shows and present day drag shows, introducing us to each of the very unique models one by one. Fien’s denim wear is as much authentic as it is inventive, giving highwaisted jeans a new definition of highwaisted with a fit that hugs the hips while loose around the knees. We also see a rough, yet feminine denim dress and jumpsuit, beautifully accessorized with ostentatious bling and stiletto heels. Some of the jeans are tattoo printed, others are patched together from different tones of blue, but all of them really breathe the same edgy vibe. Fien has made her statement and we can’t wait for what’s next!
